It all sounds fair enough until you break down the permutations. Without casting aspersions on any of the teams involved, it's possible for one team to lose all four of their round-robin games and still make it to a quarter-final by virtue of score difference over another winless rival in the same group.

Rynagh"s could surprise a lot of people in this game, though Rovers" fighting spirit may see them sneak the draw that they need to stay in the senior ranks. Erin Rovers are competitive and committed team, but they don"t score freely, and if they can"t shake Rynagh"s loose early on, the men in hoops will grow in confidence. Players like Gary Mahon, Gary O"Connor and Stephen Wynne are well able to take a score, while if either of the Rafferty brothers can put the shackles on Alan Lynam, Rovers will find scores very hard to come by.

It should be simple - but this is the stage where St Rynagh"s traditionally play their best football. Once relegation becomes an issue, that"s when the Cloghan men spring into life and there is every reason to believe that the same thing could happen here. They gave Ballycumber plenty of it and arguably deserved a result while Rynagh"s lost by nine to the same opponents. On form this season, this should be a handy win for Erin Rovers. Rovers drew with Clara, Rynagh"s rolled over and died.

GROUP WEBSITES

Shannonbridge will have their work cut out handling the effervescent pairing of Gearid O"Grady and Shane Dooley, but Ferbane exposed Tullamore"s mental fragility last time out and Shannonbridge could easily do the same this weekend. If he spends his time going from side to side and hitting in long-range shots over crowded defences, Shannonbridge"s scorers will be starved of possession and Tullamore will get home, possibly by the four point margin that they need. We"re going to predict Kelly will learn his lesson from the Rhode match and Tullamore to go from county champions to relegation candidates by Sunday evening. The key lies with Jason Kelly - if he moves the ball along and doesn"t overplay it some fifty metres from goals, Shannonbridge will win.

We guess twelve. Clara had a good win over Raheen in the previous round and veterans like Kieran O"Meara and Willie Reynolds are very solid players at this level, but Brigid"s were very unlucky to be relegated last year and they appear to have upped their standard again in an attempt to return to senior at the first attempt. Of the twelve games previewed in this paper, the only way there could be any surprise in this game would be if it turned out not to have the biggest winning margin of the whole weekend - that would be shock enough. As for the margin? They may or may not manage that much, but they will beat Clara this Sunday.

Raheen have been extremely disappointing in this years IFC and appear to be regressing after several years of playing very competitively at this level. Bracknagh also had a difficult outing in round two of this years championship, shipping 3-18 to St Brigid"s, but the Croghan men are demolishing all round them this year and if Bracknagh can put that one-off result behind them, they can win this. Their loss to Clara showed quite how far the club have fallen and unless they can turn things around, they look like they"ll struggle this Sunday too.

Doon aren"t firing on all cylinders by any means, but they scored 1-14 against Kilcormac/Killoughey last time out and Birr can only dream of scoring fifteen times in a single game. Doon to win by between two and three goals is the verdict. Birr can win this, but they"ll need to score at least two more goals than Doon do, possibly three. Doon warmed up for this match with a big league win over Daingean during which they scored four goals - scoring two or three more than that could prove difficult.

In order to reach a Quarter-Final, Tullamore must win this game by four points and hope that Rhode beat Ferbane in the other match going on simultaneously in O"Connor Park. That Tullamore have the players to do this is not in question - whether they have the resolve to take on and beat a fired up Shannonbridge team is quite another matter altogether. As Sesame Street could have put it, this match is brought to you by the letters Q and F, and the number 4. Tullamore found James Grennan too much to handle at midfield last time out and it"s easy to see how John Ryan and John Egan could prove similarly difficult to get the better of this week.

For example, if Shamrocks beat Cappincur in the final round, they will have had an extraordinary summer, picking up three wins and six points, but Ferbane, Edenderry and Tullamore win their final round ties, Shamrocks will not only miss out on a quarter-final, but worse still, will land themselves in a relegation play-off.
