Utah State (@2.55) vs Wake Forest (@1.54)

Our Prediction:

Wake Forest will win

Utah State – Wake Forest Match Prediction | 24-08-2019 20:00

Adding insult to injury, USU took a safety and really only avoided the shutout thanks to a timely 76 yard TD pass from Jordan Love to Gerold Bright. Quite frankly, the game was never close or competitive. Despite it being waived off via penalty, Wake Forest offense moved the ball at will after that. Aggie QB Kent Myers immediately set a bad tone by throwing an early pick-six.

Thomas Sorenson, @tomcat340: The Aggie defense should consider it a success if it holds WF to 20 points. That being said, there is some overlap between USUs ceiling and WFs floor if the Deacs dont show up and the Aggies do, an upset could be in the works. The key is the Aggie rushing attack. The only conversation in my mind is what the margin of defeat will be. Unfortunately, its tough for me to see this USU offense scoring three touchdowns against the Demon Deacons. If the offense can control the clock and put together some strong drives, Utah State will have a chance.

Free NCAA Football Pick Against the Spread: Utah State +3.5

After 2 seasons and a 19-7 record with the Badgers, Anderson left for Oregon State, in part due to Wisconsins academic standards. Gary Andersen, the new (and old) coach at Utah State, started his coaching career with the Aggies in 2009. He won just 7 games in 3 years with the Beavers and resigned in 2017, leaving all of his $12mil buyout on the table. He finished his first stint at USU with a 26-24 record over 4 years and won the Famous Idaho Bowl in 2012 before being hired by Wisconsin.

If Myers is sharp and well-protected, the Aggie defense should provide enough support to earn one of the better road wins for the program in the Matt Wells era. If any one phase of the game should falter, the Aggies drop to 1-2 with another road game looming before returning home to face BYU. Utah State isnt facing impossible odds Saturday, but against a Wake Forest team reaching its prime there will be little room for error.

The Demon Deacons cant afford to lose any of their non-conference games if they want to get to their fourth straight bowl game. That being said, the 2018 season had its fair share of turmoil. Clawson fired his defensive coordinator four games into the season and the Demon Deacons had to fight and scratch late in the year to reach a bowl game. Moreover, the ACC Atlantic remains one of the most difficult divisions in college football.

The Aggies won 36-24. Wake Forest senior QB John Wolford played in that game, and he is a seasoned pro who will lead the Demon Deacons to a victory. Jaden Johnson, @jadenjohns0n: Four years ago, Utah State stuck it to Wake Forest when they made their first ever trek to Logan. In the years since, however, Wake Forest has gotten better every season while Utah State has gotten worse, and there are only four Aggies on the current roster who played in that game.

Quick Series Snapshot: Tied 1-1.

The defensive line is particularly fearsome, with senior Duke Ejiofor leading an experienced group of disruptive players and Jessie Bates III providing downfield support. Indeed Wake Forest seems to be coming into its own this year, fresh off a breakout bowl season and a convincing 34-10 manhandling of Boston College on the road, no less. This Saturday is considered a must-win game for the Demon Deacons, at home against a group of five opponent with well-documented road struggles (USU is 8-19 on the road under Wells).

He threw for over 3,500 yards and 32 touchdowns last year while throwing just six interceptions. Its fair to question the competition he faced a little. Utah State has one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the country in Bryce Love. Love is the real deal and will give Utah State a chance to win this game. But he was 29 of 44 for 319 yards in last years season opener against a stout Michigan State defense.

As good as Utah State will be as the season goes on, its not going to be as sharp as it needs to be right away. Its going to be a rough fight for the Demon Deacons, but now that Jamie Newman has been named the starting quarterback and the situation is settled, theyll get the offense going right away and force the Aggies to press.

They have one of the better quarterbacks in the nation, but they have a lot of question marks around him that will likely lead to a dip in offensive production. In my opinion, Utah State will not be the 11-2 juggernaut that they were last year, but they will still be a very tough team to beat. That being said, the Deacs definitely have their work cut out for them come opening night, and I will be pleasantly surprised if Wake Forest comes away with another 36 point blow out win over the Aggies.

Perhaps more importantly, the Wake Forest defense is still in rough shape. Theyve also lost key players on the defensive line and remain weak at the linebacker spot, at least on paper. Clawson firing his defensive coordinator in the middle of the season last year didnt do much. That should mitigate some of Utah States concerns on offense and put Love in a position to make some plays with his arm. The Demon Deacons were dreadful on defense all season.

Their offensive line hasnt been too impressive within the past few years, but they are starting to make a comeback. It has either been a total blow out with the Aggies taking the victory, or taking the bullet and going down. I am going to call that the Demon Deacons will take this game. Lauren Lomeli, @lomeli_lauren: Utah State has been playing the extremes lately. I hope that Utah State will still be on a high from last weeks win and put up a fight.

Andersen guided Utah State to an 11-2 season and a WAC title in 2012 before taking off for Wisconsin and eventually moving to Oregon State. However, his tenure at Oregon State was a disaster and he was eventually fired midway through the 2017 season. Anderson is now back at Utah State, replacing Wells, the same coach who replaced him when he left after the 2012 season.
