Virginia (@1.76) vs Pittsburgh (@2.1)

Our Prediction:

Virginia will win

Virginia – Pittsburgh Match Prediction | 24-08-2019 19:30

Hokies take this one. Can the Hokies win without a big ego pumping crowd and that adrenaline? Pitt has a winning record, but they haven't beaten anyone of note. The Hokies have the talent and skill to win, do they have the will? They lost both of their big opponent games, and the Wahoos put up points against them. Can Jerod Evans keep the ball moving efficiently in the air? Can we move the ball on the ground? Can we beat the jinx? Can Justin Fuente beat the Frank Beamer Heinz Field curse? These are questions that should have been answered by now, but they haven't been. Fuente and company have been working hard to dispel the win one get all pumped up and carless and then lose one yo-yo. Away from Lane we are 1 and 2.

Pitt is averaging just 27.8 points and 374.8 yards per game on offense this season, but the Panthers have put up over 30 points in three of four wins and over 40 in two of those wins. Darrin Hall has added 429 rushing yards. Their run defense is giving up 185 yards per contest. Kenny Pickett has thrown for 1,156 yards and eight touchdowns. Defensively, Pittsburgh is allowing 32.6 points and 436 yards per contest. Pitt has a strong run game, led by Qadree Ollison, who has run for 795 yards and seven touchdowns.

The matchup last week wasnt a good one, and the early big plays from the Eagles meant that the game plan changed. The Hoos have a big advantage on this side of the ball. This week, Pitts defensive strengths and weaknesses match Virginias offensive strengths and weaknesses. There is simply no reason for the Cavs to not be successful on offense.

well, this is a game that has the potential to look like the Syracuse loss; new team, new coaching staff, new regime - old curse. The Panthers have an elite run defense (5th), but are rocking the 112th passing defense in the FBS. Virginia Tech achieves an away victory, against Pitt, for the first time in 17 years. The Hokies haven't beaten Pittsburgh, away, since 1999. There are simply too many VPI offensive threats on the field, particularly in the passing game, for the Panthers to overcome. As long as the Hokie team that defeated UNC and Miami shows up, this should be a VT win. If not... Virginia Tech has never once beaten Pitt at Heinz Field.

There is just too much to really be confident in anything. I just dont know. Can we stop Pitts run game? Which team is going to show up this evening? The score could go either way but this one is a mild shootout. Can we run against Pitts defense? This is truly an away game, with little crowd energy or support, does that affect this team? Do we protect the ball?

Game Information

The Cavaliers are tremendous on defense, holding opponents to just 18.8 points and 327.4 yards per game. Offensively, UVA is putting up 28.3 points and 390.8 yards per contest. Olamide Zaccheaus is the leading receiver with 56 catches for 690 yards and six touchdowns. Jordan Ellis is leading the way with 683 yards rushing and seven touchdowns while Bryce Perkins has run for 575 yards and six scores. Perkins also has thrown for 1,623 yards and 15 touchdowns. The Cavs are led by their run game, which averages 186 yards per game.

With the energy the Virginia defense will get from the home crowd, hard to see them letting Pittsburgh run all over them. The run game hasnt been nearly as effective on the road, where they only average 151 ypg and 4.6 yards/carry. The Panthers offense relies heavily on their ability to run the football. This is an ideal matchup for the Cavaliers defense, which is ranked 20th in the country against the run, giving up just 113.0 ypg. Pittsburgh ranks 22nd in rushing (227.9 ypg) compared to 121st in passing (146.4 ypg).

The Pitt offense doesn't scare me, but neither did Syracuse. The biggest match up will be Pitt's defensive line versus our offensive line. Pittsburgh will be ready to play Thursday night. They manhandled us last year, and the Hokies' unit needs to perform better. If we can keep Evans protected, the Hokies should be able to move the ball. The game will be physical and low scoring.

Virginias four-game winning streak ended last Saturday in a somewhat disastrous manner as Boston College rudely came into Scott Stadium and punched the Hoos in the mouth. The Hoos just came out flat and never stood a chance against a hot BC team. We knew the winning wouldnt continue forever, but it did seem like BC was beatable.
